Blackwoods is a 2024 feature film about black male mental health, inspired by the fact that 45% of men today say they do not have one male friendship they can rely upon in time of need. Indeed, the film points out that black males as a group have the highest suicide rate in America.

That said, Blackwoods is not the downer one might suspect. Just the opposite — we see how Black men can bond and proactively overcome the obstacles to leading fulfilling, productive lives.

Based on a real experience following a black male wellness retreat the director attended when his father passed away in 2021, Blackwoods highlights the importance of community and not doing life alone. This is the third film from Cincinnati‘s Hear and See Productions, helmed by award winning filmmaker Cam Marshall.

Starring Ira Cross, Dominique Owen, Scott Calmeise, Christian Hilton, Craig Lamar Brown and Brandon Carr. Runtime 70 minutes. Tickets are $12 student / $20 adult in advance and $16 student / $25 adult at the door.
Blackwoods will be preceded by Trash Wife, a 10-minute short film by Evan Maines.

EVAN MAINES SHORT FILM SYNOPSIS & BIO

ABOUT THE FILM – TRASH WIFE

World cultures throughout history have used found objects to make human figures and dolls — pine cones, corn cobs, cotton sacks, tree branches, buttons, broom sticks, etc. In that context, the short film’s title, TRASH WIFE, is not as enigmatic or pejorative as it might appear on first pass.

CLICK TO PLAY TRAILERAfter a man loses his wife, he resorts to bizarre methods of coping – in the midst of loss and trauma, he attempts to reconnect with his wife by rebuilding her out of found objects, mainly things he finds in the trash. However, he’s about to learn that if you truly love something, you have to let it go.

TRASH WIFE stands as an artistic and gallows-humor approach in looking at the grief and sense of loss everyone eventually faces. As the film unfolds, the main character seems like an outsider, estranged from the regular world. By the end of the film, we might see a piece of ourselves in his character. TRASH WIFE also marks one of the films actress Katelyn Nevin performed in before her passing in late 2023. This film hopes to connect through a fascinating and darkly humorous look into broken-people trying to figure it all out.
