For generations, many people who have experienced oppression, violence and other dire circumstances have elected to remain silent about their ordeals. The lasting effects manifest in family, work and social relationships, impacting returning veterans and immigrants alike.

Colette Ghunim has lived through this situation, as both of her parents endured trauma in their childhood — her father was expelled at a young age from Palestine during the 1948 Nakba, while her mother and grandmother escaped domestic abuse in Mexico City. Growing up in suburban Chicago, Colette and her brother Ramsey could not escape the unspoken divide that separated parents and children.

As an adult first-generation American woman, Colette sought to understand the legacy and generational influences that shaped her life. TRACES OF HOME is her personal journey with aging parents to find healing and embrace the humanity that binds them as a family.

Our post-film discussion leaders, Tala Ali and Lena Zurub, each have first-hand knowledge of life as the children of immigrants. We are fortunate to have them with us and invite you to join the conversation after the film.

Adult tickets $10.00 advance, $15.00 at the door.

COLORS OF TIME is a totally delightful mixture of period drama, timeless romance, family secrets and art history — seamlessly connecting past and future. An inventive tour-de-force from director Cédric Klapisch, it is cleverly structured, beautifully written, artfully photographed and superbly acted by a talented ensemble cast.

The film evokes feelings of sincerity, kindness and joie de vivre – as we see present-day citizens embrace the humanity of their ancestors. Post-film discussion follows each screening.
