GHOST IN THE SHELL

With Ghost in the Shell you do not need to be a die-hard Japanese anime fan to appreciate the highly detailed computer animation, choreographed action sequences or the philosophical constructs at the heart of the story. A break-through animated sci-fi thriller, one of the best anime movies of all time and an essential part of the genre with far-reaching storytelling influence.
This is the original 1995 classic, in Japanese with English subtitles, not one of sequels or spin-offs that formed the franchise in succeeding decades. With a 97% “Fresh” score, Rotten Tomatoes offers this consensus: “A stunning feat of modern animation, Ghost in the Shell offers a thoughtful, complex treat for anime fans, as well as a perfect introduction for viewers new to the medium.”
Director Mamoru Oshii challenges our intellectual curiosity as we explore humanity’s relationship with technology and the question of “what is life, anyway?” In the process, he shares his vision of society 35 years in future, which as we see in the “Cityscape” clip above is remarkably prescient.
“Ghost in the Shell is a stunning work of speculative fiction, the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence. Its design, the poetry of its visuals, and the depth of its themes set it apart among science fiction films. My compliments to Oshii-san, an important visionary work.”
~ JAMES CAMERON (Avatar, Titanic, The Abyss, Aliens, The Terminator)
