CHRONICLES OF A WANDERING SAINT is sweet, funny, deadpan and magical.
A winner at SXSW, Tomás Gómez Bustillo’s magical realist debut takes a surprising turn around the half-hour mark, shifting from gentle satire of religious belief to something more philosophical — whereby writer-director Bustillo conspires with his audience as the entire end credits roll before the action resumes.
In movies, small towns and big miracles go well together. Everybody knows each other, news travels fast and city slickers — with their cynicism and logic and skepticism — rarely intrude. So it is with Chronicles of a Wandering Saint, a winsome comedy-drama about the residents of a small coastal town in Argentina where a woman makes a startling discovery and confronts her ambition and desire for admiration.

A tale about love after life and the mysteries of the day to day being just as profound as those of the divine. Horacio Marassi’s performance is unspeakably lovely and achingly sad, and Mónica Villa is glorious as a woman seeing the world anew once she is not ‘in’ it. A gentle comedy about the small and big things which make living sacred – the most profound being truly seen and loved.
