By popular demand, MAD GOD will return for an encore, with deep-dive post-film discussion to unpack this dense, intriguing and mysterious animated thriller.

Andy and Ian of Secret Base Cinema are back with their monthly installment of mind-expanding, over-the-edge, cinematic mayhem.  They’ve selected a recent release, Phil Tippett’s animated masterwork and NYT Critic’s Pick, MAD GOD.

Tippett is a two-time visual effects Oscar Winner (Jurassic Park and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi), two-time Prime Time Emmy winner (special effects) and recipient of a Bafta award (visual effects). Combining mastery in stop-motion and CGI, the work of Tippett and his studio is too voluminous to list but these selected works will give you a visual glimpse.

MAD GOD is a passion project, germinating over 30 years since inception. Put aside by Tippett due to other obligations, it was revived by staffers volunteering off-work hours, pulling Tippett back into the process for subsequent stages.

The film is a visual odyssey, traveling through an underworld of tortured souls, ruined cities and monstrosities – in short: atmospheric, dystopian, awe inspiring, grotesque yet at times amusing, truly an experience unlike any other.

“The final form of Mad God isn’t the film itself, but the memory after you watch it. It’s bringing you to that moment just after waking up from a dream, frozen, exploring fragments of your feral mind before they fade back into the shadows. That’s the moment. Mad God is just a way to get you there.”
— Phil Tippett
