Cincinnati World Cinema August News:
Oscar Shorts Encore … Gordon Lightfoot … Denise Ho …
John Lewis Discussion Date Change … Sundance Shorts

Hello Everyone,
Back from a restorative hiatus, with much to share. Margaret had a recent experience that spoke to the important connections we have all formed via Cincinnati World Cinema.  She was at Coffee Emporium in OTR and ran into a couple of CWC regulars.  While waiting for their beverages, they chatted and agreed that not being together watching films at the Garfield was a huge absence in their lives.
Even when tempered by distance, the written word, music and visual storytelling can feed our intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs. Our intellectual curiosity connects us to learning that inspires, facts that empower and a global community that illustrates the common bonds of humanity.
It will be a while before we can all be together in the Mark Painter screening room at the Garfield. Until then, we will do our best via the CWC Virtual Cinema to provide you outstanding motion pictures from around the world. We miss you all and hope that you and your families are OK.

Please Support CWC by renting an online film for your household and by giving a film rental as a gift.  When you do this via a CWC link, we receive part of the proceeds – helping us stay afloat.  Worthwhile films can help us remain a community that values and shares ideas, experience, and expertise.
Here are four films we think you will enjoy watching or sharing as gifts…

☀ Gordon Lightfoot – “If You Could Read My Mind”
Trailer, description, exclusive clips  Great music and personal revelations from Canada’s greatest singer-songwriter. His words are sensitive poetry, his ballads tell stories that capture your heart. His silky baritone exudes emotion. His musicianship and arrangements are exquisite.
☀ Denise Ho – “Becoming The Song”  (ends August 27)
Description, trailer, rental  The true story of the pop superstar who put her life and career on the line to support the determined struggle of Hong Kong citizens to maintain their identity and freedom.
☀ 2020 Sundance Shorts
Film Descriptions, trailer, rental  Known to be eclectic and edgy (and sometimes mystifying), this year’s slate is more mellow than previous years, with comedy, drama and documentary from around the world. Featured are the Grand Jury Prize Winner & Nominees, in an 82-minute program of six short films.
☀ DATE CHANGE: John Lewis – “Good Trouble” Discussion
Due to the recent announcement of the Dem Convention, the livestream discussion date has been pushed back to August 24, 7 pm.  Details & Registration on Facebook.   Join Paul Booth, Stephanie Jones and Cymone Horton for an online conversation about the movie, the man and the movement.
☀ Watch the John Lewis documentary: Synopsis, trailer, exclusive clips  The biography of a lion of social activism and the civil rights movement.  Meet the man who, through his principle, personal sacrifice, and activism, helped change the course of American history.
